Mrs. Dusty

Joy McKean picked up the Best Composition Award in 1973 for Lights on the Hill, 1975 for Biggest Disappointment, 1978 for Indian Pacific and was the eighth pioneering Australian country music act to be elevated to the Country Music Roll of Renown with Sister Heather in 1983.

By the 1940s Joy and Sister Heather were making appearances at school concerts and charity shows.

In 1949 Joy and Heather began presenting their own country music radio show from radio 2KY in Sydney.

They gave us the country classics Yodel Down the Valley and The Morning Mail.

In 1951 Joy McKean married Slim Dusty (Gordon Parsons was best man) and Sister Heather married Reg Lindsay 3 years later in 1954.

Slim Dusty (real name David Kirkpatrick) worked as a plasterer for a short time and lived in a house he built in Epping NSW whilst expecting their first child.

Anne Kirkpatrick was born on July 4, 1952 and just two years later her parents were on the road with their own musical troupe.

Anne won the Best Female Vocalist at the Australasian Music Awards in Tamworth in 1979.

In 1970 Slim Dusty became the first country music entertainer to receive the MBE and the rest is history.

Joy grew up listening to Jimmie Rogers, Carter Family and Harry Torrani.

These days Joy enjoys listening to Beccy Cole, Gina Jeffreys, Sara Storer, Adam Harvey, Amos Morris and one of her favourites Troy Cassar-Daley.

Troy is a lovely young man and l enjoy his music very much said Joy

I caught up with Joy McKean (Mrs. Dusty) on Monday and spoke to her about her life without Slim, the new Slim Dusty Family album and the Reunion Tour.

“Slim’s music goes on forever as he has left a great legacy said Joy.

“Since Slim died many people have been asking whether l will go on the road with Slim’s music”

I asked Joy had it been easy to get the family together for this Reunion Tour.

“It has been a jolly lot of work quipped Joy but I can’t wait to meet all our friends we met when l toured with Slim.

“I will be sitting in the same dressing rooms l shared with Slim.

The album Reunion – The Slim Dusty Family (EMI) features unreleased songs sung by Slim from an album that Slim did before he died in 2003 and at least one of his lost songs written in 1942.

Anne and David Kirkpatrick plus four grandchildren, James, Kate, Hannah and Daniel are featured on the album.

“It blew me away when l saw the album on top of the country charts and in the mainstream ARIA Album Charts as well”

I asked Joy if she was a proud grandmother with this release.

“I am thrilled at the talent of the grandchildren

“It is so hard to get the family all together for this tour as David is a specialist in emergency medicine and Kate is a sub editor for a magazine.

“This tour is not likely to happen again with 3 generations on stage together.

“It will be handy to have our own doctor on the tour.

“James is a talented singer/songwriter/producer having produced our DVD.

“Hannah is also a talented songwriter.

The album features tracks written by Don Walker, Paul Kelly, Anne Kirkpatrick, Hannah Kirkpatrick, James Arneman, Peter Denahy, Joy McKean, David Kirkpatrick, Eric Bogle and Slim Dusty.

Joy said they were terribly disappointed that they would not make it to Melbourne on this tour but there was no venue available although they will do 2 concerts in country Victoria.

I asked Joy about Slim’s famous Ford Fairlane and any chance l could take it off her hands!

“No way quipped Joy; it is sitting in the garage and l start it up every now and again and it is running like a charm.

“Eventually the car will be placed in the Slim Dusty Centre in Kempsey when it is completed”

To commemorate what would have been Slim Dusty’s 81st birthday on June 13th, EMI Music has released a new single How Good It Is  written by Slim Dusty fan, Cold Chisel co-founder Don Walker.

The track was recorded by Slim just before he fell ill back in 2001.

SECOND ĵDUETı ALBUM DUE FOR RELEASE MAY 2008:- More good news from myself and long time duo partner Pat Drummond,.. weıve actually done it!,  Yes indeed, we have finally stopped talking about it and are about to release our second duet album ³Long Journey Home². Itıs been many years since our first joint album ³Six Days in December² album hit the streets in 2000 and far too long to wait for a follow-up, but itıs finally (nearly) here. Most performers go through many different phases in their ĵevolutionı as artists and we both realise that circumstances in both of our lives have meant that we will not be able to tour like we have done in the past so instead of moping about it we think itıs time to ĵcelebrateı our ten years singing & touring together and this album is just that.  It contains many of the songs that we sing in our shows and whilst some songs are tracks from Patıs past solo albums, the duet versions of these songs are very different. We will of course be doing a little touring together to promote the new album, where we can manage it, so please donıt miss us if we are visiting your town. If youıd like a copy to promote, play, review etc etc ORDER NOW!!!

FIFTH ³CHANGES² SINGLE HITS RADIO:- April 2008 brings the release of the fifth & final Radio Single from my beautiful ³Changes² album, truly my best album to date, released in Australia on NFS 121. Its an original (co-written with Richard Porteous) and rather snappy little number called ³Blue Mountain Rain², to remind us all what good bluegrass music is about. Please give it a spin if you can, itıs already been a certified Number 1 on the UK/Europe chart,.. letıs see if Oz Radio can give me the same support! As a special offer to ANY Djs willing to have an on-air chat with me in conjunction with this new single, Iıd be happy to include a ĵCD giveawayı for one of your listeners during the interview.  If youıd like to take this opportunity, give me a call, email etc.. and as usual, any Media personnel, Djs etc not having the albums can get them direct from me,.. Generally we have a very cheap Media price of $10 (5 Euro, 50 Norwegian, Danish/Swedish Krona, $10 Canadian, 5 British Pounds, $10 NZ, 500 Yen or 5 $US),.. but donıt let that scare you, if it does, just contact me!

TAMWORTH 2008 & OTHER GIG NEWS:- Thanks for everyone who came to visit our shows in Tamworth,.. it is really important to support the indies at this festival as, letıs face it, we do all the real hard work. More and more the major artists seem to just swan in and do their one big concert,.. and then with money bags under their hats, swan out again!,... not us,.. we are in for the long haul,.. we do gigs day in, day out, under not always the best conditions, sweltering in the heat and the rest, what would this festival be without the likes of artists such as us?  Amazingly, the weather was unseasonally comfortable!?,.. for the major part of the festival, the best weather Iıve experienced in 23 years!   Sorry about the cancellation of our trip to WA & Nannup festival.  Itıs a sad day indeed when an artist has to cancel a gig but losing some of our gigs made the costs simply well outweigh the fees, donıt worry, we are trying to rearrange this trip for 2009 - any help with promoters, venues, organisers etc would be appreciated. Apologies for not making the ĵShoestring Christmas Eventı, as little William was sick (I must admit after watching the horrendous weather unfold that day, I wasnıt so disappointed!) and also for not being to do a guest spot at the Bluegrass Championships as hoped, they just ran out of time. Please catch up with us if we are passing your town,.. we have gigs in Nelson Bay and Lightning Ridge coming up and need to slot in some extra gigs in the surrounding areas - if you can give us venue details or help us set up a gig, please let us know.

TIDBITS & THANKS:- thanks to all those Djs who spun my little sad winter ballad ³The Healing Kind², it enjoyed many weeks wandering through the Top 30, so thanks for the support.
I have a couple of albums from fellow UK Country singer ĵJohn Dean Fosterı to giveaway, so anyone interested in giving me a radio chat remind me and you can have one, heıs got a lovely voice. Thanks to Andrew Clermont, Sam Smythe, Carter & Carter, Rod McCormack, Bruce Howat, Joan Douglas, Marilyn Morgan, Bill Arnett, Davidson Brothers, Cheryl Byrnes, Bob Howe for all the gigs, Val, Tracey and my Dad for the babysitting & Accommodation - we couldnıt have got through Tamworth without you. Thanks to Festival Fm, Jill Cameron, Wayne Brennan, Louise Maher, Virginia Jones & Bonita Brown for all the interviews and assistance,.. again we couldnıt do what we do without you. Thankyou Nicki Gillis for the shoes!! (donıt ask!),...Iıve have a few Djs tell me their Radio Stations read out artist ĵGig Guidesı regularly, please let me know if this happens at your station & where to send my gig guide details to.  Also If your Radio Station welcomes Artist gig Posters to brighten up itıs walls, just let me know and Iıll send some! Thanks for all your emailed jokes, Picture funnies, Ecards etc, but please DONıT send me the fancy powerpoint presentations (.pps files) as I canıt open them and they take up a lot of download time,..

Dave makes the HOT FM TOP 100 Country chart for the first time!!! Woo Ooh
"Sing Hello Mary Lou" Daves new NFS 121 Country Radio Release and the 4th track on the "It's Just Turned Drinking Time" EP slips into the Chart this week 10th May as a newbie, let's hope it it sticks for a little while.

The first 2 tracks "It's Just Turned Drinking Time" and "Waiting Here" have been very successful for Dave in terms of Awards and Nominations and we hope that Daves music may finally start to get picked up and played a little more often.

Ironically, "Sing Hello Mary Lou" is largely an autobiography of Dave's life in music and singing all the old favourites to audiences everywhere and trying at the same time to get audiences listening to his own original music and stories.

Dave would like to thank all the DJ's out there doing a great Job and all the friends and fans that ring in and support the music.

Currently he's back in the studio finishing off a New Album with another 9 new great original tracks to go with the 5 already off the EP. Once again using the great talents of Harry Jon Nanos as music producer for the album and Nathan Warrick co-writing some of those great guitar tracks along with some fine Pedal steel & Dobro work from Dave Moore and a quite a few surprise guests that can't be revealed at this stage.

The New Album should be ready for release around mid year.

Dave has already been asked to appear on the NINE & WIN NETWORKS Saturday morning kids show ( A National Show seen on every Network Station in Australia ) to promote his new Album and to talk about Country Music. The episode will air in October this year. He's really looking forward to that and also another good year getting his music out there for people to hear.

   ‘Electralounge'

Biography

Described as a “Trailer Park Band from a Tarantino movie”. James Eugene’s Electralounge draw their repertoire from a diverse musical landscape. Electralounge play the music of great artists such as Link Wray, Lonnie Mack and Johnny Cash in a guitar instrumental style. The five piece band is completed with lead vocalist Shauna Parker singing songs from the darkest side of town…

Singer.

Canadian Singer / Songwriter Shauna Parker is the Special Guest Vocalist with Electralounge.

Shauna sings a very personal selection of songs that touch on her musical influences. Best known for her Soulful Country vocals with The Shauna Parker Band she now embraces ‘The Blues in Jazz’ with effortless ease. Expect the feel of Billie Holiday and Peggy Lee as well as Shauna’s own dreamy Country tones.

For her many Country Music fans Shauna has a fresh set of songs to sing that are close to her musical roots. Breathing new life into classic tunes by Patsy Cline, Hank Williams, Ray Charles and Gillian Welch.

Band

James Eugene’s musical journey started in the bars and clubs of the West Country of England. He began playing guitar professionally at the age of 16 and has been playing, writing songs and falling out of transit vans ever since. Known for his ‘edgy’ guitar style he now takes lead vocals on a few songs including some of his own compositions.

Floyd Baxter (Double Bass) and Big Hand Bannister (Drums / Percussion) have played music together for most of their musical career and enjoy one of those very special musical partnerships. Undoubtedly the tightest rhythm section in town.

For live shows Electralounge expand to include Stevie ‘Bebop’ Thompson (Guitar) and Glen Richardson (Keyboards / Vocals)

The band are based in Brighton UK.

THE ALL STAR COUNTRY ROADSHOW

The A.S.C.R. comprises of “The Gentle Giant Of Country Music” Reg Poole,

“Mr Versatile”  Craig Giles,  “Man Of Many Voices” Owen Blundell,

“The Girl With The Golden Voice” Sharon Benjamin

& special guest artist Mr Frankie J.Spencer.

The inaugural 2007 A.S.C.R. tour was so successful that it was decided to do an extended tour in April 2008 … The combination of these four talented and popular entertainers was a winner from the start. After every show enthusiastic audiences praised the professionalism, fun and value-for-money aspect of the event.

The Gentle Giant of Country music, Reg Poole
was at his usual best, singing his great Aussie style of rodeo songs and bush ballads.

Craig Giles, aptly dubbed “Mr Versatile”,  was in top form with his polished, cabaret style of country and classic sing-a-longs.

Owen Blundellperformed a blend of country and comedy and also threw in a swag of impersonations.

Sharon Benjamin gave the audience an insight  into the songwriters world with her original songs and stories.

Frankie.J.Spencer was thrown into the mix to round off the already value packed show.

What makes this touring show so popular is not only the individual performances of some of Australia’s finest entertainers, but the interaction between the artists as well.  You never know who will be on stage with who and to add even more unpredictable entertainment is a guest appearance (anytime during the show) by the hilarious “Frankie. J. Spencer”.

Every Show was followed by the audiences yelling for encores and even a few standing ovations.

The ALL STAR COUNTRY ROADSHOW
is a proven winner with variety and entertainment at it’s best.
Negotiations are already underway for the next tour.
